BSF John – Lesson 16 Discussion

Doctrine: The Cross for a Believer
Attribute: Holy
Big Idea: Dying to self
John 12:24,25 “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. “

“In the name of the Lord” Sung by Katie

Prayer, Image

****Adoration
Dear Jesus, we praise You because You humbly came to earth to serve, not be served. In Your humility, You gave Your life to save me!

****Confession
Father, You tell me, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) Forgive me when I surrender to comfort and ease instead of denying myself and being obedient to You.

****Supplication
Father, so many of Your people around the world suffer for following You. Strengthen and encourage them as they humbly carry their cross for Your glory.

****Jesus, You came not to be served, but to serve. Help me and those in my BSF group and my church to see practical ways to follow Your example and serve each other with joy.
In Christ’s name, Amen

Scripture

****John 12:23-26
Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

****Luke 9:23
“He who comes after me must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”

Q10,11,12

*****John 12:27,28
“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

Q13

**** John 12:35,36
“Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”

Q15,16

****2 Timothy 1:7-8
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.”

****John 12:44-46, 49,50
“Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
