Lectio Divina is an ancient prayer practice which allows us to sit with scripture, and listen to what God is saying through the Holy Spirit.
During regular practice, there is time given to sitting in silence between each reading; Since silence can be awkward online we will listen to a portion of a worship song between each reading.
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3, 28-29
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”
Lectio (read)
I will read the passage aloud slowly and intentionally. Use your imagination to place yourself into words. Think about to whom these words were written, who may have been the author, and reflect on what you have read about the book of Hebrews the past few weeks.
Meditatio (meditate)
As I read the passage again, open yourself to the Holy Spirit. Pay attention to any words or phrases that you notice. How might God be speaking to you today?
Oratio (pray)
As I read the passage again, turn the words into a prayer. Your prayer might be a praise, a request, or a plea for direction, to God regarding your own personal situations and challenges.
Contemplatio (contemplation)
I will read the passage one final time.
“Listen to the words and rest in the love of God. Contemplative prayer leads us into silence so that we can listen to what God is saying.”
